FREYA GASCOYNE

Freya Gascoyne is an artist based between Essex and London.

They have exhibited work across the UK and Italy, and regularly facilitate workshops and community programmes.

Their practice is inherently interdisciplinary, moving across and between:

painting;

researching;

collecting;

drawing;

writing;

performing;

facilitating;

speculating;

and

experimenting

An exploration of identity, specifically queerness and gender, underpins most facets of their practice currently. Alongside paintings of queer bodies, they play with tenderness and care through performance and collaborate on creative research with community projects such as the Museum of Transology. Inspired by ideas of transformation and plurality, their work holds utopias and dystopias in the same breath, drawing on formative teenage experiences and on-going revelations from the dance floors of London’s queer raves. Their colourful, semi-abstract, semi-figurative paintings reveal the expansive universes created through queer bodies loving and living.

creative research

Creative, participatory research is an integral element of Freya's practice.

Alongside facilitating workshops, creating cultural probes and curating exhibitions in their own projects, they also run workshops for Firstsite and Whitechapel gallery.

They are also a freelance research consultant and have worked on projects researching decoloniality, renewable energy systems in Fiji and sustainable education with TESF's global network.
